Venezia

Hi Auntie,

Venice.   No cars.  No bicycles. Just boats and walking.

We stayed at a pension that Amanda found – super cute with a room that had a little cordoned off area with a bed for Amanda! Noelle and I always sleep together in our bed so finally she has her own space that isn’t a sofa bed—out the window we look at one of the canals and we are just down the canal from San Marco Square.

Venice is marshland that consists of 14 islands that are connected by walking bridges.

The Bridge of Sighs is the only covered bridge.
It connected the justice building with the jail, so when they transported the prisoners over the Bridge of Sighs, they couldn’t jump off and get away.  But there are other theories out there – like, waving goodbye to their lovers who were off to war the damsels would ‘sigh’ as they passed under the bridge.  So you choose.

We all enjoyed our walking tour and especially St. Mark’s church.  The mosaics were amazing and the fresco of the Virgin Mary’s Family Tree was my favorite.

Noelle and Amanda in Venice
Our tour took us to a glass blowing factory, which was interesting enough until it became apparent that the owner started showing me pieces in special lighting. The pieces I liked were by two artists and he said immediately said that I have expensive taste—which, got his hope up I suppose – or he was trying to flatter me into spending money; after many displays in special lighting he gave up on the $6000 vase and dropped down to a $1200 vase.  I told him no.  If I couldn’t buy the one I really wanted, then I would buy none! Capisce?

We later had a dinner at an interesting place where Noelle had pasta with Squid ink. It was black and made our teeth black. We didn’t really notice a flavor difference, but we did share the table with an English couple, which was enjoyable.

Historic Florian
We agreed that in Venice the food was a mixed bag – some was mediocre and overpriced; some places were charming.

While Noelle went to the four museums around San Marco Square, Amanda and I each had a glass of house wine at the historic Fiorina.

We were surprised by the 32 Euro bill – then we noticed that they charged 12 Euros for the music played by the small orchestra
